Ooh! Internet! Shiny!
Sep. 2nd, 2007 07:56 pmOh, internet. Why must you be so shiny and distracting when I have feminist theory to critique? And Forster to read? Instead I just want to go read more of
mistful's fic, because she's fantastic and I am enthralled by her characterizations (truly Harry and Draco never seemed half so interesting. Sometimes I think fantastic fic is the only thing that makes Harry Potter worth it, they're so bland when sampled alone.)
Here! Have music! While I go and writeDickensian-referential 10/Rose shippy fic a summary of some gender analysis essay on HoD.
"I Will Love You"- Fisher
"Bubbly"- Colbie Caillat
"You Belong to Me" - Jason Wade
"Crawling Up a Hill" - Katie Melua
ETA: Now going off to sleep in someone else's bed. Yay! More shiny distraction!

Naomi: I have had a rough week. I need my whore!
Me: Work, work, work... Do you wish for music too?
Naomi: YESPLZKTHX. I shall bake you cookies now.
Me: Right then, pull out the spare mattress, I'm on my way over.

I wrote a long paper once about how fanfiction and derivative texts are useful because they create a new resonance between the source text and the derivative text, enhancing the meaning of both and instituting a practical system of reader-response criticism. And that it's also just fun, and can redeem the laziness of some writers! *cough Jo Rowling cough*

Date: 2007-09-06 03:19 am (UTC)I completely agree with your statement. What better way to express understanding of a text, or even the derision of an ending *coughHarryPottercough*, than to explore more in depth it's characters?
As a writer myself, I find it can be a bit easier to flesh out preexisting characters than to come up with new ones. Ultimately though, it can hamper the ability of a writer who can only write from someone else's works. But it is a great way to get get reader response for sure. And a great way to find out that you have talent, or that you need to relearn third grade english.

Date: 2007-09-07 02:52 am (UTC)Besides, fanfiction is fiction for the sake of fun. And fan. *stares at many aborted original characters* I try... un sigh.

Date: 2007-09-07 02:58 am (UTC)Fanfiction is not being fun to me right now. Fanfiction is looking deep into my eyes and telling me all my writing skill is gone and furthermore I am probably totally unemployable. I am not very useful at all tonight with fanfiction, original fiction, or that random rubbish that teachers go on about.
....I should probably go to bed.

Okay, don't panic, that's about it. And why, my ff is waaaaay worse than yours. But it wouldn't make sense to you from a contextual point as it's about different shows. But, rest assured, with your literary abilities, you will go far.
*sleeeeeeps*
