Go read this post by [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors  right now because it is brilliant and perfect in every way as a picspam about the awesomeness of Doctor Who companions.

Plan for Friday night: write/finish something for [livejournal.com profile] andi_horton , finish writing Doctor/Rose fic for [livejournal.com profile] then_theres_us , defeat the lingering inability to finish any fics at all lately, then reward self with eps of something/episode of Slings and Arrows/finish reading Have His Carcase because Peter and Harriet are teh bestest.

Actual Friday night: have mild headache, stare at two fics for five hours, write literally three sentences between them, post Craigslist ad for a room in my apartment, fail to write emails I need to for work, fail to watch anything entertaining, fail to finish fics, fail to participate in [livejournal.com profile] then_theres_us , fail to even wash my fucking teapot out.

I wish I could remember how to write. Fuck it, I guess it's time for bed.

PS Yes I am aware that I fucked up a few of the lyrics, oops, if it really bothers you I can re-do the ones you want.

In reading some Chesterton poetry tonight, I came across a poem that seems to me to be unabashedly Doctor/Rose shippy. My first impulse was to run and show [livejournal.com profile] shinyopals because... I don't know, but  I thought I'd be good and share it with the whole class.

A MARRIAGE SONG

Why should we reck of hours that rend
While we two ride together?
The heavens rent from end to end
Would be but windy weather,
The strong stars shaken down in spate
Would be a shower of spring,
And we should list the trump of fate
And hear a linnet sing.

...and good things end, and bad things end, and you and I remain. )

Because I was bored and not focusing on editing the True Blood article like I should have been today, I spammed [livejournal.com profile] andi_horton with crack!fic first lines that I'll never write.

  • "The worst part about regeneration, the Doctor decided right then, was that if he did die while being passed out the large intestine of this Giant Venusian Mammoth, Donna would never, ever, ever let him hear the end of it."
  • "The first sign that something was wrong with the TARDIS was the sudden and terrible lack of hot water in Rose's shower. Her resulting scream, which was a sound usually guaranteed to bring the Doctor running, did not, so she screamed again. And then she wrapped her hair in a towel, tied on her dressing gown, and went to investigate the console room."
  • "When Katie and Sark accidentally stole the TARDIS, they originally had no intent to become intergalactic con artists. Well, she hadn't, anyway. What Sark had intended in locking them in a dimensionally improbable phone box was anyone's guess."
  • "While Rose knew in theory that the metacrisis had meant that the Doctor who had followed her home like an abandoned puppy was also half Donna, she was unprepared to discover that, as a result, her husband also seemed to be a bisexual transvestite and slightly schizophrenic. While this didn't make as much of a difference in his personality and behavior as might be expected, it was slightly unsettling when she found him in the dressing room at H&M, wearing a wrap dress and scowling at his complete lack of curves."
  • "The Doctor knew about literature and he knew about pocket dimensions, but somehow it wouldn't have automatically occurred to him that, in her post-metacrisis post-amnesia state, Donna might take a vacation in a Wordsworth poem. Yet there she was, wandering lonely as a cloud. There were a truly frightening number of daffodils, too."
  • "Many people have gone over Niagara Falls in barrels. However, just because one or two people can fit inside a small wooden structure and tumble over the falls and maybe possibly not die doesn't mean they should, and Rose informs the Doctor of this, wringing out her shirt and pouring riverwater out of the teapot she had previously left on the next to the time rotor on the console."

YEAH I DON'T EVEN KNOW

I am RIDICULOUSLY involved with all that is going on with [profile] alienish_being , [profile] rose_m_t , [profile] jacqueline_t and [livejournal.com profile] unearthlyish at the moment. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY, IT IS MENTAL. I want to comment but fear jumping into the fray will mean getting jumped on by Jackie, especially as I have nothing particularly helpful to say?

(Except I'm kinda on the Doctor's side! I mean, YES, I understand that it is a nuisance with the tabloids and all, but when is that NOT a problem? If the Doctor stayed locked in the house and didn't socialize then they'd just write articles about how Rose keeps a mad husband locked in the attack and is currently on the prowl for young governesses or something. But... what's the big deal? Yes, sure, Stevie's a prostitute, but... she's still human, she still has feelings, she still needs friends, and I know the unconventionality of it rubs everyone distinctly the wrong way, but the Doctor is hardly the sort to consider any friends he makes to coincide with the sort of, erm, intimacies he shares with Rose. I guess it just comes down to the tabloid exposure/Vitex PR mess.)

([profile] alienish_being , I get it, it's so easy not to notice situations/interactions that get interpreted as sexual until somebody hits you over the head with it. What is that all about?)

Thanks for dropping by to stare, I now return you to your normal schedule of me talking about my plans to go apply to be a spy. I may wander off to watch some more Jeeves and Wooster. I LOVE YOU STEPHEN FRY AND HUGH LAURIE.

I recently realized that the fanvid I made and posted a while back had nothing there and perhaps THAT, rather than me smelling sort of funny, was the real reason behind me not getting any comments on it. *is trying to not look like so much of a comment whore* So here it is again. First and only fanvid, fluffy Doctor/Rose set to U2, hope you like, blah blah etc.

Dragon*Con recaps woo!

Or, at least it is until I get bored and wander off to read/compile all my Humphrey Bogart movies into a playlist for later.

I went downtown to Dragon*Con on Saturday and Sunday, and it was my first time, and I had a lot of fun and I'm totally going back next year. I kinda even want to look into working, because I love being behind the scenes for things. Nina, maybe we both can write for the Daily Dragon next year? By that point I may even have my own Atlanta apartment with crash space for friends?

But back to this year's Con, which was great and I didn't expect to end with me hitchhiking in northern Atlanta at one o'clock in the morning. But we shall get to that later.

ME'N MAH FRANS. )

And then it all ended in hitching a ride from Doraville after one am. )

Okay, fandom, we have new Doctor Who updates so you can commence to explode everywhere like a giant messy thing. Right.

Set pictures from the Sun.

As far as I can see the usual Moff-rage (heh, Moffrage, I like that) has started up, and the Greek Chorus of IT IS NOT MY SHOW ANYMORE I DO NOT CARE I AM NOT WATCHING EXCEPT HIS OUTFIT IS KIND OF SILLY AND CUTE has taken up its position. *waves* And those looking forward to Moffat are chiming in, so we're all having a grand old party. Yay! (I think Doctor Who fandom should have a trademark drink. I have pineapple rum here if anyone cares to invent anything. Or wait, banananananana daiquiries? )

However, while we're talking about Moffatt and Gilian Whatsername (?) and other things that come out of places around Ayrshire *coughGerry Butler anyone? is looking fine these days cough* the Sun ALSO reports that the Holy Grail is hanging out there. Marvelous place, Ayrshire, apparently. Robbie Burns liked it, after all.

Anyway.

casting spoilers and childrens literature and asexuality and the beauty of the universe oh my. )

I GOT CHILLS. CHILLS, I TELL YOU.

Spoilers for Ashes to Ashes 2x04. )
LOVE this show.

It’s just their little world, Jackie Tyler and her little girl. They’re happy, there. And then her little girl is gone, grown up and left with a man and Jackie wonders where her fair warning was. Rose always comes back full of stories and kisses and trinkets she doesn’t know what to do with but Jackie doesn’t need a spare bedroom, doesn’t need calls at midnight from other planets. She just needs to know her daughter is safe. But no one will promise her anything.

I'll be the other hand that always holds the line connecting in between your sweet heart and mine. )

[please comment if you take. feel free to friend for other fandomy goodness.]

I JUST FINISHED MY FIRST FANVID GUYZ. HOMG HOMG I DID IT. Okay, the motivation was a digital storytelling project for my Texts and Technologies class, but STILL, it is done and it is cool and I will probably be making more vids in my future. It's all about the Doctor and Rose and how, despite getting separated plenty of times, they always find some way back to each other. Music is "Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix)" by U2 and all clips are property of the BBC.

Lyrics to Stars songs are so intriguing and good for writing prompts, I think. I've been fascinated with "Barricade" ever since Sara Crawford put "meet me at the barricade" in the bowl of prompts at our last writing marathon.

YAY WRITING MEME:

Just for my friends that are writers, here are a few prompts that have inspired me and my friends lately, take a moment and write a poem/vignette/whatever and post it in your journal, let me know, and then make up a few prompts of your own!

  • the holes in her stockings stretch like holes in her memory
  • just another signpost pointing straight to ruined streets
  • bare-chested and hollow
  • changes
  • what is home?
  • no one ever does
  • his night is her day

So I have little to say about "Turn Left" except that it was fucking amazing and I can't wait to see what Rusty is going to do to blow out the rest of this series.

In the meantime, Freakangels (a marvelous comic you should be reading) is taking a weeklong hiatus, so Warren Ellis wrote a letter about his convention plans and Where He Gets His Ideas From:

I still get asked with appalling regularity “where my ideas come from.”

Here’s the deal. I flood my poor ageing head with information. Any information. Lots of it. And I let it all slosh around in the back of my brain, in the part normal people use for remembering bills, thinking about sex and making appointments to wash the dishes.

Eventually, you get a critical mass of information. Datum 1 plugs into Datum 2 which connects to Datum 3 and Data 4 and 5 stick to it and you’ve got a chain reaction. A bunch of stuff knits together and lights up and you’ve got what’s called “an idea”.

And for that brief moment where it’s all flaring and welding together, you are Holy. You can’t be touched. Something impossible and brilliant has happened and suddenly you understand what it would be like if Einstein’s brain was placed into the body of a young tyrannosaur, stuffed full of amphetamines and suffused with Sex Radiation.

That is what has happened to me tonight. I am beaming Sex Rays across the world and my brain is all lit up with Holy Fire. If I felt like it, I could shag a million nuns and destroy their faith in Christ.

From my chair.

See, this is the good bit about writing. It’s what keeps you going. It’s the wild rush of “shit, did I think of that?” with all kinds of weird chemicals shunting around your brain and ideas and images and moments and storyforms all opening up snapsnapsnap in your mind, a mass of new and unrealised possibilities.

It’s ten past two in the morning, and I’m completely wired, caught up in the new thing, shivering and laughing and glowing in the dark. Just as well it’s the middle of the night. No-one would be safe from me right now. I could read their minds and take over their heartbeats with a glare.

Faster than the speed of anyone.

That’s how it works.

Amen, Warren. That's exactly how it works for me, too.

So I'm about to head out to Tesco and see what there is in the way of dinner, and I definitely need to look up where the British Museum is and where I can get a muffin pan and a small towel for my kitchen. Side note: Fruit vendors on the sidewalk are AWESOME.
