Lyrics to Stars songs are so intriguing and good for writing prompts, I think. I've been fascinated with "Barricade" ever since Sara Crawford put "meet me at the barricade" in the bowl of prompts at our last writing marathon.
YAY WRITING MEME:
Just for my friends that are writers, here are a few prompts that have inspired me and my friends lately, take a moment and write a poem/vignette/whatever and post it in your journal, let me know, and then make up a few prompts of your own!

- the holes in her stockings stretch like holes in her memory
- just another signpost pointing straight to ruined streets
- bare-chested and hollow
- changes
- what is home?
- no one ever does
- his night is her day
No One Ever Does: A Poem In Honor of Rose Tyler
She breezes through walls
and people
and potted plants;
a tickle to her, a shiver to them.
When she is real,
she thinks,
she will notice the shivers
(the calling card of visitors)
though she is well-aware
there will be none.
The novels and movies
are full of those crossing universes, but
no one ever does.
So she,
the lone ghost,
keeps going
to be the one that does
the impossible--
She breezes through walls
and people
and potted plants;
a tickle to her, a shiver to them.
When she is real,
she thinks,
she will notice the shivers
(the calling card of visitors)
though she is well-aware
there will be none.
The novels and movies
are full of those crossing universes, but
no one ever does.
So she,
the lone ghost,
keeps going
to be the one that does
the impossible--

And -- why are you so good at poetry? I have been trying to read as much poetry as possible lately and do some of my own, because my friend at Goblin Fruit has really gotten me into it and all the writers I admire have done it ... but I'm too insecure about what I've written so far to post anything. I'm not good at working layers of meaning into anything I write, I think. I'm a one-meaning kind of girl. But this long rambling paragraph was just to say that THAT WAS A GORGEOUS POEM AND IT WAS ABOUT ROSE TYLER, THEREFORE YOU WIN AND ARE AMAZING.

Date: 2008-08-07 12:52 am (UTC)Well, while I would like to claim that repeatedly orgasming over "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and listening to Thea Gilmore all the time brought my poetic skills up, it was probably more working for Share that helped, and seeing all the truly shitty poetry submissions come in. When you know what to avoid writing it helps. This was one of the ways I learned how to distinguish good writing from bad, too- by reading the shit at Fanfiction.net, and learning what NOT to do. But this method might not work for everyone, so I don't necessarily recommend it.
Oh, pretty please, write something. I want to see!
Also: I know you've done some convention stuff for io9, are you possibly coming down to Atlanta for Dragon*Con in September? Because if you did, I'd be even more persuaded to come, and you could also tag along with me to Java Monkey for some open-mic poetry...
