Dollhouse. 1x01.
I liked it! Okay, I will admit, there were some points where the exposition was a bit... well, clunky, but obviously exposition is needed on the first episode of any given show just to establish what the world is. So I expect that will go away soon and we'll just go into character development and plot and all those fun things.
I really liked... ah, crap, what's his name. Paul? The one that makes everybody who loves BSG squeal TAHMOH! in an excited manner. His introductory scene, with the cutting between the boxing shots and the meeting. It showed what kind of person he is, for one- a suit-wearing agent who quietly defies the rules but is generally in with the agency he works for, and also someone who is capable of great violence and anger and pushing back, under the surface. It also showed the dynamics of the meeting in the conference room; while it may have looked like a business meeting or a slight chastisement, the fight shots showed how Paul was being beaten down, but also rising up again. Well done, director!Joss.
As for Echo, I'm not in love with her yet, if only because there's not a definitive her to be in love with. There was Caroline, and then the chick on the motorcycle, and then Elizabeth Penn, and Echo in between- but I'm still waiting to see who she is. The ramifications of her having Elizabeth Penn's memories- that was very intriguing, since it was clearly a programming mistake that she had to overcome. But was it Ellie's personality, or was it Echo? I'm intrigued! Which is a very good thing.
And the Dollhouse itself already gives me conflicty feelings: YAY. Conflicty ethical situations are GREAT for this sort of thing. Of course I watched expecting the Dollhouse to be a whorehouse, and it totally is. Despite them reassuring themselves and each other that they're helping people, clearly renting people out, especially ones that felt they had no choice in the matter like Caroline, is NOT RIGHT. But then again... if it hadn't been for Echo/Ellie in the hostage situation, that little girl would have gone through the exact same thing as the originator of Echo's memories went through. She saved her. And in a small way, saved a little and won a little for the woman who couldn't fight a ghost and killed herself.
Oh, Joss. Send us something good and better next week. :)

Date: 2009-02-14 06:35 pm (UTC)Yes to pretty much everything you've said -- not to mention that that's the best write-up of the boxing scene I've seen so far. Yay.

Date: 2009-02-14 06:40 pm (UTC)I think I need to watch the episode again. I am a little too ponderous this time around, catching the little details I missed the first time will probably bring me up to full-on fangirl squee.
Oh, god, it's such a dreary day and I just don't want to do the work that I really have to. *procrastinates madly*

(HURRAY FOR THE BOXING SCENE. Def. agree.)
