Information and spoilers about Dexter season four.
Okay, really? I have to say that if Deb figuring Dexter out takes ALL SEASON that's going to really annoy me. Because the concept was introduced in the finale of s3 when Deb gained access to the information on Dexter's past. Obviously she's not going to piece it all together right away, but still, I give that arc 4-6 episodes of being actually tight and interesting. I think if it drags on longer than that it is going to get boring. I would SO much rather see what happens when Deb knows rather than being unendingly clueless.
This is why I rec
thunderemerald 's fic so hard that I am too lazy to get links for so either she can be nice and link it in the comments or anybody else can go find it themselves. (Btw, dear, did you ever get around to betaing what I sent you? I know, life's been hella busy.)
It's been really interesting so far to see the reactions of non-immediate-victims who do find out about what Dexter is. Doakes and Lila were sort of each other's foils- both fascinated with pursuing Dexter's darkness, but with opposite displays of their feelings. In the next season, whathisname found out, but he was more interested in bending it as a tool to fit his own needs. In a way, he was kind of like Brian, since they both decided Dexter reflected them and then wanted him to become their companion in carrying out their own agendas. Dexter killed all of them- not necessarily because they knew, but because as they were able to recognize his dark secret, he was able to recognize theirs, and recognize the lack of guidelines containing it.
So I think that for Deb to know, understand, and live with Dexter's secret, some pretty heavy parallels are going to have to be drawn between the two of them. That, of course, will make for some interesting characterization and I look forward to seeing it. I think one possible parallel is how both Deb and Dexter have problems maintaining relationships with kindred souls: when it comes to hardworking, ambitious, justice-driven types, Deb's relationship wtih Rudy was a lie, with that FBI (?) guy ended with them both going different directions, all of her work relationships get tense and rocky, and not until the latest guy she's with is she having any kind of settling success- and, like she said, that's because she's like Red Bull, and he's Prozac. Like Dexter, she eliminates her doubles, too.
Anybody know when the season is starting? I'm too lazy to look it up.

Something is Cracking
I HAVE NOT BETA'D YET BECAUSE I AM A HORRIBLE PERSON. I'm sorry, hon... but at this point, what with Teh Novel and all the editing I have to do for work... you may be better off finding a more reliable beta. One who doesn't open Word documents with an undertone of "hate reading hate reading hate reading" in their eyes. I love your story. I rly rly do. I just don't know if/when I'll be in the right mindframe to edit (or even write) fanfic again.
*cries*

Date: 2009-05-01 02:43 am (UTC)Dood. Don't even worry about the beta, I totally get it. Half the time I don't even get a beta for fic anyway because (okay, I know this may be arrogant, I totally know) if I don't know what I'm trying to say and have edited it into the right shape, why the hell would I be posting it anyway? Unless there's sleeping pills involved. But that's another story. In any case, I was mostly just wanting to make sure that you weren't going OMG YOU DESTROYED ALL MY CHARACTERIZATION WITH YOUR STORY THAT MAKES NO SENSE. And you say you love it. So therefore, all I need to do is another look-over, and post it when I feel it. (Not that I don't relish and love your critiques! But trust me, I know, I've been having people PAY me for that kind of shit lately because it takes actual work.)
*HUGS* You will write fic again! I'm sure of it. Your soul is just maybe a little dead in that direction at the moment. It's okay, MINE IS TOO! We can be soulless husks together.

Date: 2009-05-01 02:32 pm (UTC)Ahhhh thank you for understanding, and I'm sorry AGAIN for being a flake. But yeah. People pay me for that sort of thing too, so. Meh. I get it. You get it. Everyone wins.
SOULLESS HUSKS LIKE DEXTER. Yayyyyyy. I like this plan.

Date: 2009-05-04 12:14 am (UTC)HAHA ME TOO. We are all that is cool, minus dry cleaning bills for massively bloodstained clothes.

Even better, everyone gets PAID.
