It occurs to me, as I jump between scenes trying to put together my Prufrock vid, how very similar the scene at the end of "The Runaway Bride" and the last scene of "The Waters of Mars" are, both in imagery, characterization, and theme.

In both, the Doctor stands before the TARDIS in the street as snow drifts down, just having delivered the oneshot!Companion home. But while he thinks all is well, he has saved the day, the world, her life- she has other ideas. She sees through the triumph to his own problems below.

Doctor: "I don't need anyone."
Donna: "Yes, you do. 'Cause sometimes... I think you need someone to stop you."

But then later, in WoM...

Adelaide: "Is there anything you can't do?"
Doctor: "Not anymore."

Donna tells him he has gone too far, but makes him promise he'll find someone. Adelaide tells him he's gone too far, in the only way she knows will shake him. If he has crossed the line to keep her from death, maybe he will not see himself as powerful enough to live beyond the borders when he sees even that did not save her from death.

Sorry, words are not making sense probably. New medication woes.

I love that I never caught the "Following her grandmother's footsteps" and then "Grandmother's legacy intact". I wonder how then, Adelaide gets off with killing herself and the whole thing just keeps on trucking. I would figure that the grandaughter would not be as inspired by her grandmother saving earth, appearing there simultaneously, and then killing herself. Sometimes RTD leaves my brain mushy from the plot holes.

Eh, I was figuring there would be explanations of massive survivor's guilt for the suicide, and maybe her granddaughter was driven by the desire to not be one of the only survivors, as well as figuring out The Strange Case Of The Instantaneous Interplanetary Travel.

Though that's me making shit up again instead of RTD doing his damn job, like what happened in that Year That Never Was where we get to presume that Martha had characterization happen to her.

The two survivors had in their page that it was Adelaide that had single handedly saved them and got them back home. I think I read it right anyway...

She had saved the day in the end, and I suppose that the world thought losing everyone else was too much for her and that's why she commited suicide.

Either way, it was her day. And it ended up being the rescue that stuck, not her death, even though it was her death that was the most important part to get the ball rolling.

So, the granddaughter probably wants to honour her memory by doing something great and goes out and does something great.

That's my guess anyway :P

I didn't realize it until I started trying to decide between using clips from one scene or the other, and then I realized... it's like exactly the same setup. There's a pretty similar setup in "The Next Doctor" as well except it ends on a more cheerful note.

Thanks, dear. They gave me soma for the muscle cramp that's bunching up on my shoulder, and if it doesn't knock me out it makes me rambly as hell. Andrea was the lucky recipient of such rambles last night, as usual, I might go back and post some of it. :P
