Fic rec! Mostly I'm just trying to close a tab without losing this cause it's totally awesome. Why is it awesome? Well, because we need some explanation for a certain pairing that popped up out of seeming nowhere in The End of Time, and this fic does all that and more, with utmost charm.
Rusty generally stiffs us when it comes to explaining Martha. A difficult year of brilliant character development during Last of the Time Lords? Sure it happened! In between episodes where you won't get to see. Martha's pathway to becoming a doctor and leader in UNIT? Sure! It happened... sometime, look, she's there now and you don't need to worry about her decision-making process. Ends up saving the world on a regular basis with Mickey Smith, and marrying him too even though she had a fiance named Tom at some point? Yup! ...wait, are you STILL looking for the story here with her?
I work with plenty of medical students; I would LOVE to hear one of them tell me about how she became the Doctor's companion, how she saved the world, how she saved herself.
But here is one fic that I hope is the first of very many that shows how Martha and Mickey came together... and really, with their understanding of relationships that never were and fighting to save the world when the Doctor's off with someone else, they aren't too far apart.

It began with the little things, like how he wheedled his way onto her couch on that first night. She recalled, with perfect clarity, every moment of that evening. How the tea had grown cold as he told her about his gran, who he had buried twice, and his life on another Earth, where Zeppelins ruled the skies and Britain was ruled by a president instead of a prime minister.

It wasn't till three weeks after the wedding that Martha had enough wine in one sitting to give voice to the thought that had been lurking in the back of her mind ever since Mickey'd proposed.
"I'm Martha Smith," she started.
"You bet," said Mickey, also a little sloshed, and leaned in for a kiss.
"Thing is?" she said. "You're not the first. Smith, I mean. I mean, you're not the first time I've thought about being Martha Smith."
"No?" said Mickey, leaning back. Not drawing back. Just leaning, curious.
She looked him in the eye. "When I met the Doctor, he called himself John Smith at first. For a while, I thought about..."
She shook her head. The look on his face told her that he already knew how that sentence ended, and finding the right phrasing would have been hard enough sober.
"Always the Doctor, isn't it," he mused. She tried to find hurt in his voice, but it wasn't there. She wasn't sure how she felt about that.
"Only at first," she said again, wondering if she was healing a wound, or just beating a dead horse.
He repositioned himself on the couch, and carefully refilled his glass, then hers. "I've told you about Rose, yeah?"
"Always Rose, isn't it," she quipped. "Are you about to compare us?"
"Were you about to compare me to the Doctor?" he countered, half serious.
"I was about to try," she said, trying to picture the Doctor kicking back and enjoying cheap wine, and failing. "But there's no comparison, is there."
She kissed him again, and he held her tight. They didn't speak, but they were happy.
