February 27, 1923. "Miss Alice Reighly, 1409 Harvard Street, president of Anti-Flirt Club, which has just been organized in Washington, D.C., and will launch an 'Anti-Flirt Week' beginning March 4. ([livejournal.com profile] mind_the_tardis  introduced me to Shorpy and its hi-res public domain historical images today. Oh, this is so much better than work.)

...I can now reap the rewards of enabling someone else to find the most entertaining/intriguing photos on that site. *approves of Shorpy pictures on flist*

Heee! I want to include this in my work but my boss said no fun stuff in the journal. JAMA has art and poetry, why can't A&R? No fair.

But fun stuff is fun! And rheumatism could use some levity, I would think. If this is the journal that involves rheumatism. Have some humor with your joint disorders!

Oh how fabulous! And unfortunately, I don't have any special resources regarding DC in the 30s other than the obvious. I did find that identifying old institutions, like the Mayflower Hotel, and looking at those places' sites and their own "Our History" information was a good way to start.

That's a good idea! I shall have to try that. I was originally going to set the story in San Francisco since that's where all the fun mysteries go (okay, well, I can only think of Nick and Nora's home being there, and Sam Spade, but those characters/setting/type of mystery is kind of what I'm aiming for), but it turns out that none of the San Fran banks failed in 1929. And I have a plot point about distrusting the banks, which were apparently thriving there, so that falls apart. I figured Washington DC would be a good second choice, with all sorts of plot options for intrigue and mystery.
