It seems that Elisabeth Sladen has passed away. D:

The Gallifrey One page said that a BBC obit is forthcoming. I don't know any details. I think it was confirmed by her daughter on Twitter today though.

I know. I wish it were just a publicity hoax to sell more copies of her autobiography which I think is about to come out. :(((

T'eyla just told me. And I only saw her in the New eps and one or two Classic ones, and I'm still suddenly down! Cancer is so...insidious.

I didn't even know she had cancer until today... I've seen about half her Classic eps and all of Sarah Jane Adventures and the New Who eps. I always got the impression that Lis had a good deal of Sarah Jane in her, or vice versa, and I am sure that she was a fantastic person. So sad.

I didn't, either. I've looked at Wiki, and filming was already going on for S5 of SJA (I still need to watch "Death of the Doctor!"), so I guess, well. It wasn't expected. Not that dying ever is, really.

But good for her. Her life, and for playing that character. "School Reunion" left me thinking of Sarah Jane as a character who let the Doctor go and went on to have a fantastic life on her scale and her terms. The career of Sarah Jane, as a character, says a lot about the evolution of female characters in TV during the time of Sladen's career. From sidekick, to breaking off and letting the hero go, to headlining her own show.
