Oblig. TVD Reaction Post.
Feb. 2nd, 2012 09:46 pmSo I guess there was some stuff with Damon and Stefan and Klaus and a deal or something or other? It looked like a nice dining room. Vampires hire decent decorators. Oh! And Mystic Falls is dealing with its first murder spree ever! (Vampires never count: if you're a human who chooses to live in Mystic Falls and you end up as vampire trail mix, it's clearly suicide.) And I was approximately 0% surprised by the big reveal at the end.
But seriously, Elena and Caroline, my bbs. They are all that matters.
Did NOT see the murder of Bill Forbes coming. I thought he and his mind control juju were going to be an arc, so I don't know what's going to happen with that now. And he's consistent until the end- I think he's the first person we've seen choose to actually die, rather than transition into a vampire.
I've said it before, Elena has so many mirrors this season. Earlier, when she found out Klaus killed his mother, she said of Rebekah that she's just a girl, who lost her mother too young, and who loves recklessly even if it hurts her. Clearly, Elena was not just thinking about Rebekah then. And now, again, she sees the mirror of losing a parent in Caroline, as Caroline's father slips away from her. The worst part is looking forward to all the things a dad should be there for and won't be-- that's about where I started crying.
It's such a journey from the very first episode, when Caroline envied Elena for getting the attention and approval that Caroline wanted, and when Caroline didn't really know better than to want Elena's life. And now, surrounded by death, irrevocably changed, and losing her dad-- she is finally in that place. And it's heartbreaking.
Then Matt and Elena return home to find that they'll need to hire Klaus's decorators, because no amount of Magic Eraser sponges are going to get all that blood off the walls. And the hardwood floors. At least there's no carpet to deal with. (Damon, a lesson for you, you can't ruin Persian rugs that you don't leave out for people to bleed to death on!) And the only way Elena can keep Alaric from bleeding to death is by killing him herself.
I really hope that gets dealt with in the next episode. Yes, she knows he'd (probably) come back to life. Yes, she knows she counts as supernatural enough for it to count with the ring. But still. She has to stab to death the man who is her anchor and only family in all of the madness, and even knowing everything, she still had to hold the knife and watch him die at her hand. That's gotta fuck a girl up.
In some ways, with Ric filling a father role for Elena, while Caroline is very carefully NOT saving her father's life and thus effectively killing him, Elena is doing about the same thing.
UGH THE PARALLELS ON THIS SHOW. WRITERS HOW DO YOU EVEN DO THIS. I AM SO USED TO DISAPPOINTMENT AND UNFULFILLED POTENTIAL EVERYWHERE ELSE AND THEN YOU MAKE ME HAVE ALL THE FEELINGS.
I was glad Matt was there. He's still awkward and chemistry-less (though god does Nina Dobrev exude enough to compensate) but I like so much of what he represents: he's still Team Human, he still has to hold it together when the world is ending, and while he can't let himself fall into the supernatural world himself, he can be there and be human for his best friends when everything in them has been exhausted by all these huge events in their world. And that's important, too.
IS IT TIME FOR ANOTHER GIRLS SLEEPOVER YET? I THINK IT'S TIME.
