A story, today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last strains of the liturgical music faded away as the rabbi stood up purposefully and made his way to the front of the synagogue. The congregation grew silent, an expectancy built from carefully-honed habit.

"Yahweh is good, is he not?" asked the rabbi, by way of an introduction. Loud murmurs of assent travelled around the sanctuary, then died to a sussurrus before silence reigned again.

"Every day," the rabbi continued, "I head stories of Yahweh working in the lives of people. Just a few days ago, one of the women of our congregation, Mary, came to me and told me about the miraculous deliverance of her son, Yeshua.

"Now, Yeshua had always been a good kid; obeyed his parents, helped out with his younger siblings, kept the Sabbath. But when his father, the carpenter, Joseph, died, Yeshua began to change. He left the house a lot to go to taverns and parties, parties where people drank, and where Yeshua drank too. He would spend days at his friends' houses, friends that were prostitutes and tax collectors." The rabbi said this in the tone someone would use while contemplating what the cat did on the rug. "He went drinking with them too, and gossipped with the women.

"Many of you know how long Mary has been praying for her son; many of you interceded with her for Yeshua in these past months. And now finally, the Lord has broken through. Yeshua told his friends he could not be around them anymore, and has agreed to meet with one of our Torah scholars to talk about and be counseled on his grief over his father."

The rabbi beamed. "But that's not all the Lord has done in Yeshua's heart. He has also put a vision in him, a dream to be a missionary. Yeshua believes Yahweh is leading him to preach the Torah in Ethiopia. We stand with our brother as he ventures out into this new territory the Lord is leading him into.

"Now do we serve a great God or not? Clap your hands if you think we serve a great God!"

The applause was deafening. Even the lepers outside could hear it.
