Doctor Who 3x11 "Utopia" episode reaction

intrikate881) Yay, Jack. Yes, he's a bit odd and creepy but still loads of fun all the same. I'm glad that after a season and more than a half of Doctor Who and a season of Torchwood we're finally get some answers about what's been going on with him. I honestly didn't think he had lived the whole time around... I thought that would be too long, that he must have been jumping around somehow, but actually that would be too nice! His deal is the same as the stone angels... he got dropped in the past to live to death, except he can't die so that didn't quite work. But that finally explains what he was doing in 1914. Poor bastard got to live how many times through 1941, though? Three, at least. Now there's some bad slash for you... Even the Doctor thought of it, it's that obvious.
Still, though 1869 Cardiff. Probably dropped in the moment Rose and Nine were leaving. Probably fell right on top of Dickens. But still.. I don't understand why there. Was Jack near the Gelth that were coming through? And most of all, did he see Gwenyth back then? Because, like Adeola/Martha, she's the same person as Gwen. And Jack was pretty willing to get Gwen on the Torchwood team, despite retconning her, he wanted to keep her there. Connection??? Also, if Jack's been around forever and ever, how do Owen and Tosh and Ianto not know who he is, either? Cause in 'Day One' they were trying to get answers out of Gwen.
There's such a change in mood from Torchwood to Doctor Who... and I know they're totally different shows, but still. Jack is growly and not very nice and in charge and all that, and then suddenly he's all puppy-dog eyes at the Doctor. And I guess I understand that... I think he was just as much in love with the Doctor as Rose was, and I think it's possible Jack's journey closely mirrors Rose's as well. And possibly the Doctor's, a little- in Jack's personal timeline, didn't he just completely abandon Ianto pretty much a few minutes after snogging him in relief after coming back from the dead? Ah, well, there's a crazy amount of snoggage going on on Torchwood anyway. For awhile I was wondering if it was going to spread all around Doctor Who as well. Though wasn't there a huge bunch of not-sex this ep? The amount of eye!sex and hands touching was astounding.
2) Martha. Martha, Martha, Martha. Do you know, your endless pitifulness is so strong that I immediately paralleled you with Chantho? Completely same air of "poor me, I am the unnoticed companion." Really, Martha, I like you. I do. You're smart and snarky and dress frigging awesomely, I want your coat like woah. You're going to be a doctor- good for you! I sympathise more with med students than shopgirls automatically. So PLEASE STOP SUCKING. Honestly. And get some facial expressions if you want to keep up with the Doctor and everybody else on this show. I find it so difficult to understand why it's eleven eps into the season and we sitll know next to nothing about Martha and find her difficult to sympathise with. Seriously, this is the show where we can bawl over characters we've known for twenty minutes, but when it comes to Martha... nothing. I'm almost actually concerned about her- the unrequitted love, the being utterly impressed with any male who flirts with her, the mother who says she shouldn't be focusing on blokes- really, I wonder if something's wrong and we just haven't found out yet. Cause there are a lot of irregularities with the way she's written, and I do hope they add up to something.
The bits of Jack/Martha flirting going on were cute too. I would almost try to ship them, except I think RTD has something against biracial relationships even past his usual desire to rip out the heart of any romance ever. I might write an essay about that someday, I don't know. But yeah, I think our only hope for Martha's OTP is probably Mickey. That'd be cute, though.
3) Rose. We love you, Rose, all of us, except for Martha, who hates you down to your dark roots. Even Jack loves you, though you pretty much made his life the worst ever. I'm glad there was finally some acknowledgement of all that happened at the Gamestation and all that, because it pretty much was never mentioned again. So, any Timelord that looked into the Time Vortex would become a "dark, vengeful god," eh? So what is that effect on the Doctor and Rose? Rose used to call the Doctor on his crap, but not anymore, and he really has become a sort of dark, vengeful god, if you look at what happened to the Rachnoss and the Family of Blood and everybody else who's crossed his path. And what's going on with Rose? In her other universe, she doesn't have anything to keep her supressed, either. She got the same immortal-juice that Jack did, the same vortex-effect that the Doctor did. It lingered with her- the werewolf in Tooth and Claw said she still had a bit of the wolf about her, and burned like the sun. Is Rose out of control in her new universe? Does she have the power to open a Rift or something?
4) The Professor/ the Master/ Mr. Saxon: Well, this wasn't much of a surprise for me. My psychic powers Crystal from school told me that the Master would be coming back. I was sorta hoping it'd be Romana but I knew it wouldn't be, and I figured that the Master would be Mr. Saxon cause he kept popping up, Bad-Wolf-esque, and he was the only new and consistant shadowy character it could be. Well, apart from Martha's mum. Heh, that would have been amusing...
I was a little surprised that he had a watch, too. At first I thought the Professor was C.S. Lewis who I claim that boy is Tim Latimer, somehow transported by the watch to the end of the universe. And then I saw the lame YANA initials. Which really was lame. Honestly, can he not havea better name than the acronym for You Are Not Alone? I don't like it. But hey, so there was actually a REASON for Human Nature/Family of Blood! I never figured that!
What I DID figure was that the Master was going to be the big s3 cliffhanger and thing for us all to wonder and be in shock about until next March. But he's not, we know who he is and he frigging stole the TARDIS! Poor Ten. Now all he has are two whiny companions and no TARDIS. But anyway, so I speculate that the last two eps will be spent, World War Three/Aliens of London-style battling it out with Saxon!Master on the streets of London AGAIN, because I'm sure the council-pavers or whoever are bored since they just finished patching up the Cybermen damage.
Also, the Master looked strangely David Tennant-ish when he woke up and I was suddenly convinced that DT would be playing double roles and it'd be really confusing and hilarious. But no, he's someone else. Some Life on Mars guy, which is a show I need to see even though I'm half convinced its a Veronica Mars spoof.
So what I'm HOPING the s3 finale is would be Rose showing up in the very last two seconds because she's... a dark vengeful time vortexy goddess who wants to bitchslap a personality into Martha? I dunno. BILLIE PIPER COME BAAAAAAAAAAACK. I heard rumours Billie disappeared from whatever she was doing the last few days of DW filming. I hope she wasn't sick. I hope she was just hiding out with RTD and DT and a film crew.
WHAT AN EPISODE, seriously. *loves* I'm going to watch it again with Kris this week, I'll probably have even more reactions then.
ETA: Has anybody noticed the sucktasticness of the BBC Doctor Who picture galleries lately? Whoever's putting them up has no wit for titling and also has a big crush on Martha. It's unfortunate. YES. I THINK THAT SUMS UP MY MARTHA THOUGHTS BEAUTIFULLY.
It's like - here are all these things I *should* like about her. She's smart, she has to pay rent, she wants to be an independent adult - HELLO, MY LIFE. And yet, they've just gotten so bogged down on the unrequited thing, THEY FORGOT TO MAKE HER A CHARACTER. I think they just really screwed it up. Unless she's somehow a brilliant social commentary on David Tennant fangirls or something.
But no, he's someone else. Some Life on Mars guy, which is a show I need to see even though I'm half convinced its a Veronica Mars spoof.
Ha! I'm slowly watching Life on Mars, but I find it a little boring. But Sam Tyler was a good guy with a strong moral compass. The fact that he's now evil wigs me a little. *frets*

Absolutely, mine too! She has AMBITION. She graduated high school. She actually wants to go places and do things. So WHY is she, instead of throwing herself into that, throwing herself at the Doctor instead? IT MAKES NO SENSE. I mean seriously, she has the best thing going ever. I've met more than a few med students and I'm sure they'd kill for the opportunity to time travel and thus not be sleep deprived... and she is totally missing out on this for some reason. I don't get it. Maybe it has to do with her mum.
