Thoughts on the s4 casting news
Jul. 5th, 2007 08:03 pmSo at first I wasn't very excited about Donna coming back as the Doctor's companion for series four. I was more thinking that I'd have to watch it with earplugs for all the screeching. But I thought about it, talked to
notfadeaway616 about it, read
goldy_dollar's post about it, and have come to the conclusion that it might not be all that bad, really.
-She WON'T have a crush on the Doctor, and will probably take no crap from him whatsoever, which will be nice because he's been able to pull a lot of emo crap this series. Of course, we understand he's moody over Rose. I'M moody over Rose, for heaven's sake, I still nearly burst into tears in the car on the way to work when a song comes up that reminds me of her and the Doctor. But, and this is the important bit, I DON'T GO AROUND HAVING GENOCIDE ISSUES, NO I DON'T. I have my emo moments and go on with the filing or driving or barista-ing, as the Doctor should probably do.
*has sudden image of the Doctor pulling shots at the espresso machine. He'd be very hyper*
-Also if she makes Lauren Cooper references it will justify everything. Especially if she wears that horrid weave of hers. I've more or less decided that the David Tennant/Catherine Tate Comic Relief Sketch is canon.
I'm not so bothered about the whole Kylie Minogue thing in the Christmas special. Some people are dissing her for being a pop star, but so was Billie, and look how well she worked out? So I'll remain open-minded. I don't much like Kylie's music, but then, I rather dislike Billie's too. Hyper pop music just isn't my thing. *goes off to listen to Bell Orchestre* In any case, if she can act, and her character is well-written, it ought to be good. And, Titanic! Yay! Writing Team, please don't ignore the references Nine made to being there. Please. We need some Nine/Ten chemistry. Also the costumes should be fun, more Edwardian stuff! I wish they'd have more Victorian- and Edwardian-period shows, but that's just me. *loves "Tooth&Claw"*
I just hope Donna is developed well, is all. Because if she's still screechy as she was in Runaway Bride, that's going to get old fast. But I do like her not needing to be caught up re: Rose, TARDIS dimensions, etc. and just moving along. I haven't watched Runaway Bride since it came out, but if I remember right, Donna had never been interested before that time in anything beyond her life, and she wasn't ready for more at the end. I'm guessing she's ready now, though. So what form will that take? How will she handle the culture shock of not having an ordinary life? Will she still be bitter over Lance?
We'll see....

Date: 2007-07-06 04:14 am (UTC)I think she'll be irritating, but lovable. And I am so, so ready for her after Martha.
I'd take anything after Martha. But, and this is the important bit, I DON'T GO AROUND HAVING GENOCIDE ISSUES, NO I DON'T.
AHAHAHAHA. *loves*
Yeah. I think Donna's going to be good for him in that regard. Where Martha was all: "OMG, I LOVE HIM MORE THAN LIFE!@@!!!" Donna will be all: "That was a really stupid plan, Doctor. SMACK."
And IF next season is David's last year (OMG, WHY DO I START TEARING UP JUST AT THE THOUGHT?) then they also need to bring Billie back. *Ten/Rose whimper*

He needs someone to smack him. I say that out of love and adoration.

He COULDN'T. I mean, it'd be a really bad business decision. Because, with Freema not staying on steadily, Russell leaving, and David leaving too, there would be a pretty much complete turnover, which would alienate viewers. I think to preserve viewership they need to maintain a companion for awhile (which, I suppose, would be Donna) and keep David until at least the middle of the fifth series. I mean, I know continuity isn't this show's strongest point, but this will keep them from losing money.
