There are some people who do really amazing work fundraising for good causes. I, at this point in my life, am not able to be one of them. But that doesn't keep me from believing with all my heart that we need to help each other, that treating each other with love and equality and getting food to those who are hungry and care to those who are hurting is the most important thing in our journeys through life. We shouldn't cling to what we have so tightly that it destroys us when it falls away. I think that living in generosity, in realization of a world bigger than myself, and in love of everybody no matter their background or current place in life is just a better way to live.

There's been something I've seen a few times around the internet today that has broken through my usual fog of to-do lists. A beautiful young woman named Hollis Hawthorne, who is a member of a performance bicycle troupe in the San Francisco area, was basically left for dead by a hit-and-run driver during a trip to India and has sustained a very serious brain injury. Now she's in a rural Indian hospital, not receiving adequate care, and her family and friends are trying to get an air ambulence that will take her home to the US to be treated at Stanford Medical, free of charge- which is important, since, as one of the artist community that so frequently lives on the edge of society, she has no insurance. She just has to get there. Her family and friends are asking for donations, trying desperately to raise enough money for her treatment. While we're on the subject of worthwhile causes, I also want to mention WaterAid, a great organization that I've donated to several times in the past. They construct wells and toilet facilities in impoverished areas of the world- 17 different countries. They also educate people about hygeine and sanitation. Many people in the world have no access to clean drinking water. We are so privilaged that we can drink clean water and use a toilet that will not infect our water. They also work with local organizations and leaders, seeking to help in the most useful way, rather than imposing an outside vision of what is helpful.

Not all charities you have to spend money to give to, either. Click to Give, a project that is part of GreaterGood.Org, unites with sponsers to turn mere mouse clicks into donations towards organizations fighting hunger, breast cancer, illiteracy, deforestation, animal rescue, and child health. All you have to do is click.

I know I can be very self-centered sometimes. But I know that I am being transformed inside, out of being that person. I believe that living as a community of people helping each other is the other sort of society that Jesus talked about while he was around on earth, and I follow that way because, like I said, I think that's just a better way to live life. I don't know what you believe and that's something only you can figure out; however, I think that we can all agree it's good to be able to give and receive love and help from others.
